Initiative 65 & The Latest Mississippi Medical Marijuana Updates

by | Mar 4, 2021

In November 2020, 74% of Mississippi voters approved Initiative 65, the doctors’ and patients’ medical marijuana program. Since then, anti-cannabis politicians have pulled a variety of shenanigans in an attempt to prevent us from obtaining our medical cannabis rights but rest assured, it is what we voted on and it’s going to happen.

Now it’s just a matter of the health department sorting out all of the details and getting the program rolled out.

How Will the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program Work?

Now that Initiative 65 has passed, medical marijuana will soon be available to qualified medical patients with a doctor’s certification. The Mississippi Department of Health must implement the rules and regulations for the medical cannabis program by July 1st, 2021. After that, they will begin issuing medical marijuana cards and licenses to Mississippi patients and licensed businesses including treatment centers (dispensaries), cultivators, processors, and testing centers and they have until August 15th, 2021 to begin.

After companies, including ours, have obtained their licenses and permits, they will be able to begin inventorying compliant medical marijuana products.

And at that time, Mississippi medical marijuana patients will be able to legally purchase their cannabis products through licensed treatment centers.

How Do I Get My Mississippi Medical Marijuana Card?

To obtain your Mississippi medical marijuana patient license, you must first obtain a certification from a participating physician (MD or DO) stating that you have one of the 22 qualifying debilitating medical conditions listed in Initiative 65.

These medical conditions include:

  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy or other seizure conditions
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Huntingdon’s disease
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cachexia
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Positive HIV status
  • AIDS
  • Chronic or debilitating pain
  • Amyotrophic lateral
  • Glaucoma
  • Dementia
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Sickle-cell anemia
  • Autism with aggressive or self-injurious behaviors
  • Pain refractory to opioid management
  • Spinal cord disease or severe spinal cord injury
  • Intractable nausea
  • Severe muscle spasticity
  • Similar medical conditions of the same kind or class

After obtaining doctor certifications, Mississippi medical marijuana patients will be able to purchase 2.5 ounces of cannabis every 2 weeks.

Should I Be Concerned About Politicians Preventing This From Happening?

Over the past several months you have likely heard the news about Mississippi’s anti-cannabis politicians doing everything within their power to put a stop to the Mississippi medical marijuana program.

These politicians have been doing everything within their power to put a stop to the program including trying to pass a fake medical marijuana bill and attempting to raise constitutional objections in the name of halting the program altogether. But we have faith.

One can’t help but wonder how much these politicians are getting paid by big pharma companies, but I digress.

Rest assured that we will do everything within our power to ensure that the medical cannabis initiative that Missippians voted on back in November will pass the way it was intended to and we will continue being diligent until it does.  We have even gone so far as to obtain buildings in Biloxi and Natchez for the cannabis treatment centers we will be opening as soon as this passes. Unless there is some kind of significant unforeseen challenge, we have absolute confidence that by late 2021/early 2022, medical marijuana patients will be able to make legal purchases at licensed medical dispensaries in Mississippi.  We look forward to serving Mississippi’s patients at that time.
